Last week Monday was one of the most exciting days I can remember. My first two rolls of black and white film were returned by photovision lab. (bet you thought I say something about a baby being born) I can’t tell you how excited I was to receive these images, I was like a kid in a candy shop. I am realizing that after 8 years of shooting weddings that I had grown a little too accustomed to the instant affirmation that digital provides. Ever shot I took with these two rolls was a mystery for WEEKS! Getting the results back was really fun. For the most part I was really happy with the results, my exposures for good on all but two photos and the focus was ok on all but one. Looking through the lens of this new (old) camera made me think about my shots in a totally different way. Instead of shooting something the way I saw it I instead created a shot the way I wanted to tell the story happening. There were times I would bring the camera up to my eye for a shot, and then put it down thinking “meh” nothing there. When an image costs $1.50 each to make you really think hard about if the shot is worth it. Is this the way to BEST tell this story. Is this the BEST way to capture my son’s habit of watching the TV while sitting on the couch back. Is this contrasty light going to look cool on my cousin’s daughter’s face. Is this the shot I want to remember my 40 week pregnant wife with. Tash made a good point in that for the first time in my life I am treating photography as a hobby instead of a job. I bring this camera everywhere I go. Needless to say I am really excited to see where this film journey takes me and what it does with my art.
